In this precise article, I will be listing the top mobile networks offering CUG services in Nigeria as well as the full meaning of CUG well defined in a lay man’s knowledge pointing out its major uses and major places to make purchases of the CUG in Nigeria.

We will also outline the best CUG plan in Nigeria among the major mobile networks offering CUG services.

What is a Closed User Group (CUG)?

A CUG in its simplest form offers calls and SMS to mobile users in a localized area at a very cheap rate with the intention to reduced call and SMS tariff consumptions. In its unilateral sense, the Closed User Group (CUG) is a supplementary service provided by the mobile operators to mobile subscribers who can make and receive calls from any member associated with the group.

MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9mobile CUG

Does that make sense to you or should I throw more light on that? I think I should listen to my friend and keep going.

I will have to list the full and the major benefits you could get while using CUG among your company group reach out as a subscriber:

  • With CUG, you can be a member of more than one but not more than ten closed user groups;
  • With CUG, you can be permitted to make calls outside of the closed user group (outgoing access);
  • With CUG, you can be permitted to receive calls from outside of the closed user group (incoming access);
  • With CUG, you can be allowed to make emergency calls irrespective of the group subscription.
  • With CUG, you can be allowed to make calls inside the closed user group member like incoming and outgoing also.

These are possible in all CUG mobile providers in Nigeria. (MTN, Airtel, GLO, 9mobile).

The top CUG providers in Nigeria:

1. MTN Nigeria

MTN Nigeria has at a maximum level one of the biggest deals in the mobile networks across Africa and beyond powering its wide range of services in Nigeria.

For purpose of information, MTN Group Limited, formerly M-Cell, is a South African multinational mobile telecommunications company, operating in many African, European, and Asian countries. Its head office is in Johannesburg.

The company seems to see the future of mobile networks even before the future itself. As a reference point, MTN happens to be the second mobile network emerging in Nigerian around August 2001. It has seen its massive growth in all ramification in the countries economy.

2. 9mobile CUG:

9Mobile CUG is an easy way to make very cheap calls on 9Mobile (which was previously called Etisalat) within some selected group known as your Closed User Group (CUG). Even with the name change from Etisalat to 9Mobile, their codes and packages still remain the same and they still work as usual.

A closed user group refers to people whom you can call and sent text messages for free to these people. You do not need any special 9Mobile (Etisalat) number as some people may think. All you need to do is to create a Closed User Group or Join another one that has been created already as 9mobile makes this very simple, smart and easy to use.

There are generally three (3) Packages offered by 9Mobile (Etisalat) depending on your financial strength.

These are:

  • EasyBusiness Compact plan
  • EasyBusiness Complete plan
  • EasyBusiness Premium plan

9Mobile EasyBusiness CUG Compact Plan

In this plan, 9Mobile (Etisalat) offers you 500 minutes of free talk time at any time of the day.

9Mobile (Etisalat) charges 500 naira for this plan. The downside is that, if you talk much like I do, you may end up raining curses on 9Mobile (Etisalat) one day because after like 4 days, it will seem as if it was just 60 minutes that was given by 9Mobile (Etisalat). So if you talk much, just go for the Easybusiness Premium plan.

The code for loading 9Mobile (Etisalat) Easybusiness CUG compact plan is 2464*3# Make sure that you have up to 500naira before you do this.

– 9Mobile Easybusiness Complete CUG Plan

With this plan, you will be given 500 minutes of free talk time to call members of your group; you are also given 50 free messages to text anyone within your group and also 100 MB (megabyte) data for browsing.
You will be charged 1000 naira for the 9Mobile (Etisalat) Easybusiness complete plan. The code to activate the complete plan is: 24642# and when the plan gets exhausted before the one month, you can buy an additional bundle by dialling this code: 304*2#.

9Mobile Easybusiness Premium CUG plan

This is the plan I love most because it gives me what I wanted by giving me Unlimited free calls for one month. With this plan, you can keep calling the members of your CUG group for one month. One thing you have to note is that the Unlimited package is not actually Unlimited because there is fair usage of the unlimited package.

This means that though 9Mobile (Etisalat) may give very long free minutes of talk time that you can keep talking with it, some people can talk and even give stories of movies once they hear that something is free. An example is me, it happened one day when we recharged the Easybusiness premium plan with the hope that it will end after 30 days, but we were shocked when it ended after about 18 days.

We asked 9Mobile customer care agents and they said we have exceeded our fair usage limit; this means we over talked to an extent that a normal human may not think that we could actually reach the fair usage limit. But though I know I talked a lot, 9Mobile (Etisalat) should never have underrated people like us by calling this plan as being Unlimited. So the use of Unlimited is treachery to me. It is not actually unlimited, but I can say that they tried.

9Mobile (Etisalat) charges 1000 naira for Easybusiness premium plan and offers just only Unlimited free talk time to call members of your group for a period of 30 days. [But as I said, the unlimited package is not actually unlimited]. If you exhaust the plan as we did, you can buy an additional bundle plan by dialling: 3041#.

To buy the Easybusiness premium plan, dial 2464*1#.

3. Airtel Closed User Group (CUG) Services

The Airtel closed user group (CUG), enables employees within the group to call each other at no charge to them, as the organization makes a monthly payment of as low as Le20,000 per line on their behalf. This is essential as staff members will not necessarily require airtime on their phones to make important official calls within your group.

There can also be a blend of both postpaid and prepaid lines as calls made to any member of the group will not be billed.

Advance Payment package

  1. Basic plan package
  2. Intermediate package
  3. Family Postpaid package(150 CUG minutes within 2-9 family members)

facts to note about these major three packages are: For Basic, intermediate and advance payment packages, an individual can apply. For Family package, an individual can apply BUT has to add a minimum of 2-9 family members.

The family package Closed User Group (CUG) is where members of a family can make calls to each other for free based on a minimum fair usage policy (150 minutes). Calls made outside the CUG will be charged at the rates outlined in the tariff table below and I think this package is worth negotiating.

4. Glo Closed User Group (CUG) Subscription Services

Glo Closed User Group (CUG) Prepaid Services offers you Globacom’s most cost-effective package that ensures the growth of your business and relationships. Globacom is the only indigenous GSM service provider in Nigeria and the second national carrier for telecommunication service in Nigeria.

The minimum cost of getting Glo CUG monthly is N500 only. To opt-in to this Glo services, If you need GLO CUG line for yourself and other persons, you should visit the GLO office nearest to you.
Get it registered there and start using your CUG line. After your subscription is expired, you can buy a recharge card and load it to renew your subscription with just N500. The charges will be automatically deducted for the purpose.
